Certified Surgical Tech (1099) General Surgery
Pay rate: $33.00 per hour (1099)
Job location: Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center (MOMMC) Nellis AFB, NV, United States.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 0730-1630 for General Surgery
Clinic and Scope days. Federal holidays and down days are not considered work days. When
scheduled to work in the operating room (OR) for General Surgery Clinic surgeons, contractor
will report to OR at 0630 and will be relived at 1530. Contractor shall not work over 40 hours
per week. Shifts are normally scheduled for a 9 hour period to include a 60 minute lunch break.
In no instances will the HCW be required to provide services in excess of 40 hours per week.
Duty Hours: Clinic Hours: Monday through Friday, 0730-1630. Operating Room (OR) Hours:
0630 -1530. Contractor must attend the 0650 morning meeting, shift will start at 0700 and will
be relieved at 1530 from the Operating Room staff.
On-Call Hours: On-call requirements for each labor category are as follows: N/A

Job Description
General Knowledge : Must have knowledge of the fundamentals of anatomy and
physiology; principles of asepsis and sterile techniques; preparing and storing surgical
sets and packs, surgical instrumentation, and equipment; OR and anesthesia procedures;
pathology as it applies to specimen care and handling; basic microbiology and infection
control principles; basic surgical pharmacology; sterilizing and disinfecting procedures;
surgical and anesthesia complications and their treatment; hospital and OR environmental
hazards and safety procedures; handling and storage of compressed gases; basic medical
material procedures; basic medical administrations procedures; legal aspects of
preoperative care and medical ethics; roles and qualifications of surgical team members;
and basic clinical functions.
o Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support : BLS is Required.
Certifications must be through American Heart Association or client guidelines.
Members must present proof of current certification(s) through American Health
Association or client. Computer-based training does not constitute fulfilling the
training requirements. Must maintain currency at NO cost to the government.
Certified Endoscope Reprocessor Certification preferred but not required.
Experience: Three years of related experience in an accredited health care hospital
and minimum three years of surgical scrub experience. Having familiarity with, and
can assist in, robotic procedures/surgeries preferred.

o Licensure/Registration: Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST),
Certification from the National board of Surgical Technology and Surgical
Assisting (NBSTSA) or certified as a Tech-in-surgery (TS-C) from the National
Center for Competency Testing or possess a Military Occupational Specialty
(MOS) certification as a surgical technician, surgical technologist or Operating
Room Technician.
HCW Duties : The duties for the HCW are as follows but not limited to:
In accordance with the procedural physician's preference and established standards,
ensures presence of all instruments and equipment, and supplies necessary for colorectal
procedures; inspects all instruments to ensure all required items are available.
Responsible for care and handling of all equipment used.
Maintains neat, orderly, and safe work area and practices economy in the use of all sterile
supplies
Be knowledgeable about professional and practice issues related to the field of colorectal
procedures
Provides and maintains a safe environment for the patient and staff by complying with
facility requirements and safety standards
Assists the physician and RN during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency procedures.
Cleans colorectal area and helps to clean procedure and clinic room following colorectal
procedures, properly disposes of contaminated supplies and equipment. Disposes of
biohazardous waste per infection control guidelines
Performs high level disinfection (HLD) of endoscopes in the instrument processing area
such as washing, assembling and sterilizing instruments and ensuring they are functional.
Stores instruments and supplies, monitors dated packs and supplies to ensure sterility
Can properly utilize the endoscopic re-processor. Follows manufacturer's IFUs and works
in compliance with TJC requirements
Knows how to test the high-level disinfectant for efficacy and can document the test
results. Follows manufacturer's IFUs and works in compliance with TJC requirements
Prepares procedure rooms and preoperative bays, excluding medications
Demonstrates proficiency with the Da Vinci Surgical Robotic System and educates new
staff members on appropriate use.
Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other staff members
Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
Keeps accurate inventories of supplies
Knows how to operate all pertinent equipment in the Procedure Room/OR.
Attends and performs all required CBTs, department trainings, and maintains knowledge
of safety procedures within the facility. Completes orientation, competency verification,
and educational programs in accordance with facility and unit specific guidelines
Participates in committees, functions, and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant
and timely information to these groups if asked
Assists with process improvement initiatives
Participates in customer service initiatives, quality projects, and medical readiness
activities, designed to enhance health services
Maintains or assists with health record input, storage, and retrieval
Assists nursing staff with preoperative patient preparation activities.
Helps with routing medical materiel management activities.
Accomplishes routine safety checks and operator preventive maintenance on fixed and
moveable medical equipment and fixtures.
Assists anesthesia personnel with patient positioning and anesthesia administration.
Applies principles of asepsis, infection control, and medical ethics.
Assists with terminal cleanup of OR and prepares for follow-up procedures.
Receives, decontaminates, and cleans soiled patient care items.
Stores, maintains, and distributes sterile patient care items.
Assists the circulating nurse with preparing records, reports, and requests.
Performs general clinic functions. Prepares patients, instruments, supplies, and equipment
for specialized procedures in the OR and specialty clinic. Assists specialty surgeon
during surgical and diagnostic procedures. Assembles, operates, and maintains diagnostic
and therapeutic equipment. Orders diagnostic, laboratory and radiographic procedures as
directed. Performs activities unique to specific surgical clinics.
Attends in-service training in new procedures, techniques, and equipment.
Assists physicians and nurses with General Surgery/ Plastics/Colorectal/Trauma/
procedures, including surgeries in the surgical treatment of medical conditions and
diseases, and wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, etc; instructs patients in
pre-operative/post-operative care.
Maintains clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room; orders special supplies
and/or equipment.
Coordinates data collection resources for the clinic information systems.
Remains current with surgical trends, care and supplies; performs other duties as
assigned. Works the front desk as required to schedules patient appointments, reschedule
appointments, answer calls, faxes, and performs any other daily administrative, patient
check–in procedures at the front desk as required. Completes T-Cons (telephone consults)
IAW Medical Group instructions and/or Department instructions.
Performs basic administrative General Surgery clinic duties. Executes reception desk
duties according to standard operating procedures
The supervisor makes assignments defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines and
assists the employee in resolving unusual or difficult problems. Incumbent is relied upon
to perform details of work assignments with minimum supervision and guidance.
Physical demands: Work pace ranges from sedentary to a very rapid pace to include
walking, standing, bending, and reaching. The work involves long periods of moving
about the work unit. It requires regular and recurring standing, bending, lifting, stooping,
stretching, lifting and positioning patients, assisting patients on and off examination
tables, and similar activities. This includes lifting and positioning patients onto exam
table and positioning or on/off gurney and/or wheelchair. Work requires specific, but
common, physical abilities such as agility and dexterity to position patients for
examination or treatment in usual alternate positions for patients with common
disabilities. Heavy lifting occasionally may be required to relocate clinic
equipment/furniture. The work may require holding patient's extremity steadily for up to
one hour or longer. Work at computer terminal, amount of time may vary. Involves
prolonged standing and holding of surgical instrumentation when working in the
operating room environment.
HWC Requirements:
Extensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and the specialized procedures
applicable to insuring that proper structural support or other corrective measures are
provided.
Extensive knowledge of surgical anatomy pertaining to conditions involving injuries,
disorders and/or conditions in order to communicate with and understand exchanges with
medical personnel, and to perform surgical technician duties.
Knowledge of safe and proper use and operation of specialized medical equipment to
include but not limited to: tourniquet device and various other types of equipment,
ultrasound machine, mini c-arm, c-arm, and surgical robotic equipment.
Knowledge of cardio pulmonary resuscitation and other emergency first aid procedures.
Knowledge of operating room techniques and procedures in order to assist the surgeons
before, during and following surgery.
Knowledge of aseptic procedures in order to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Knowledge to research, organize and conduct an informal on-the-job training course for
enlisted personnel being trained as Surgical Technologists and Medical technicians.
Knowledge of supply, inventory and maintenance regulations applicable to all supplies
and major equipment assigned to the office.
Knowledge of examinations, equipment and procedures to make the necessary
preparations and provide assistance to the physician in the clinic.
Knowledge of clinic administrative policies and procedures in order to perform a variety
of administrative, Supervisory, and logistical supporting functions.
Knowledge of medical treatment records; to screen for pertinent information. Skill in
reporting patient's conditions for proper recording in charts, operative reports and
laboratory reports.
Knowledge of examinations, equipment, surgical instruments, implants, methods, and
procedures pertaining to Surgery, along with knowledge of related practical nursing and
surgical procedures.
Knowledge of the full range of currently used Surgical Technologist principles,
experience, practices, and procedures applied in providing services in the OR.
Demonstrate knowledge of the step-by-step progress of specific surgical procedures and
display dexterity in the use of required instrumentation. Must be sufficiently
knowledgeable in all surgical procedures to assist the surgeon in appropriate techniques
and instrumentation.
Knowledge of the common elements of a patient care plan sufficient to provide
appropriate verbal information and written facts for a plan of patient care.
Knowledge of medical facility rules, procedures, and operating instructions including
those relating to aseptic procedure.
Ability to perform basic computer skills required for the delivery of healthcare.
HCW Qualifications :
Degree/Education: Graduate from a Surgical Technology Program recognized and
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education
Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools
(ABHES), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or completion of a
formal training program provided by any branch of the Armed Forces (Army,
Navy, Air Force) for surgical technicians, surgical technologists, operating room
technicians. Completion of an accredited surgical service and clinical course.
