Job Summary:
To provide speech therapy services to patients throughout the lifespan. Upon referral from a physician, the speech therapist will consult, educate and engage in critical inquiry and administrate care. They interact and practice in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to provide skilled speech services in order to improve the patient's speech, language, voice, oropharyngeal swallow and cognitive-communication functioning.
Accountabilities:
• 1. Performs accurate assessment (speech, language, voice, oropharyngeal swallow and cognitive-communication functioning), plans appropriate/functional treatment goals and provides therapeutic interventions to maximize patient outcomes.
• Consistently assesses and modifies approach, communication, care and activities to reflect the needs of patients based on age, cultural diversity and developmental level.
• Demonstrates the understanding of the unique needs of the patient.
• Adheres to the Code of Ethics of the American Speech Language Hearing Association and the Practice Act of the Commonwealth of PA
• Performs speech therapy evaluations upon receipt of appropriate referral
• Establishes appropriate treatment programs and provides treatment utilizing the most appropriate methods
• Consistently reevaluates patients' status and modifies treatment accordingly
• Communicates with physicians, other healthcare providers, third party payers and vendors as needed
• Educates the patient and/or significant other in the treatment intervention and diagnosis
• Rotates throughout the various patient treatment areas as indicated.
• Adheres to treatment precautions/contraindications and pertinent safety guidelines
• May perform job duties outside of hospital (for example: facilities or private homes).
• Participates in quality improvement process as appropriate
• Assumes additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
• Appropriately delegate and supervise supportive personnel and volunteers.
• 2. Maintain thorough/accurate, timely patient documentation and billing records.
• Maintains accurate documentation consistent with department policy
• Bills correctly using Medicare or AMA guidelines depending on the patient’s insurance plan consistent with the departmental policy
• Documentation and billing are completed in established time frames and are an accurate reflection of the services provided
• Ensures that all necessary referrals/authorizations are in place when appropriate
• 3. Consistently meet department productivity standards while providing care that maximizes patient outcomes.
• Maintain a full caseload and remain flexible to accommodate patients
• Independently and proactively manages caseload/schedule to ensure that maximize productivity.
• Patient outcomes are maximized on a consistent basis
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Qualifications:
- Masters degree Speech Pathology, curriculum recognized by the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association (ASHA) Required
- For pool therapist, previous work experience as a speech therapist is necessary
- If assigned to an off-site location: Ability to drive a car in inclement weather
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications:
- Current Pennsylvania license in Speech/Language Pathology required
- Current CCC-SLP (Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech/Language Pathology by the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association (ASHA)
- Certified in CPR/BLS.
- If assigned to an off-site location: Current drivers' license and auto insurance.
