Job Objective:
Performs phlebotomy and specimen processing/handling; processes all specimen types to assure accurate type of registration, processing of specimens, and ordering tests. Maintains adequate supplies and participates in interdepartmental communication.

Required: High school diploma, GED or higher level degree if hired after March 1, 2024
Licensure/Certification:
Required: California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
Experience:
Preferred: Previous CPT experience
Essential Responsibilities:

Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.

Properly identifies patient using two identifiers and collects specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, or fingerstick per established protocol.

Orders and processes laboratory requests in accordance with established procedures to assure timely and accurate collection and reporting priorities.

Adheres to HIPAA standards when using, disclosing or requesting protected health information.

Collects and processes all necessary paperwork, assuring appropriate billing and reporting by courier, fax, or laboratory printer.

Utilizes time productively: maintains cleanliness (including disinfecting work area), reorders and restocks supplies and assists co-workers with tasks.

Follows established protocol for laboratory encounters.

Researches specimen problems with resolution and appropriate documentation.

Accesses, interprets, and acts on shift/daily follow-up tasks to ensure that all specimens have been processed and in a timely manner.

Processes, audits, and orders body fluids correctly for inpatient and outpatient specimens.

Consults with professional Clinical Laboratory Scientist staff regarding problems.

Works closely with nurses and physicians to ensure that ambiguous or unusual test requests are handled appropriately.

Centrifuges and prepares specimens for transport; creates/receives packing lists as needed.

Handles laboratory results, reports, shipping documents appropriately.

Acts as a liaison for the laboratory to all other departments, staff, patients, and visitors.

Answers telephone; responds to questions or directs calls to appropriate individual.

Completes monthly phlebotomy competencies in a timely manner; maintains compliance with all training modules.

Participates and assists in CPT student extern and MLS student training; assists in new CPT training.

Performs daily/weekly/monthly safety and maintenance logs.

Performs Laboratory and Emergency Department downtime procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned.
